Recycling/Green efforts
Ink Cartridges Last year alone, more than 300 million printer cartridges were thrown away and ended up in the landfill. Instead of throwing them away and depleting landfill space, the Trible Library Media Center is proud to assist Tau Delta Phi in their ink cartridge recycling campaign. On behalf of the Tau Delts, the Media Center Service Desk will collect personal ink cartridges. Each ink cartridge recycled will benefit both Christopher Newport University, with new equipment, and the environment. Help us start today! Watch the PowerPoint show for more information.
Recycle Transparencies "Every year millions of pounds of polyester from transparency film is dumped into landfills. And though transparencies are classified as Type 1 polyester, which is normally easy to recycle, the recycling of imaged transparencies is so complicated that local recycling centers won’t accept them. To help reduce this waste–and to take over where those centers leave off–3M has launched a program of its own to transform 3M Transparency Film into reusable polyester." (information from solutions.3m.com)
To recycle your transparencies, turn the transparencies into the Trible Library Media Center (Room 220) or send them to: 3M Recycle Program c/o Gemark 99 Stevens Lane Exeter, PA 18643
NRDC Renewable Energy Nationwide "Renewable Energy Nationwide was designed to show the enormous potential for new energy systems that reduce global warming emissions, protect critical environmental values and move the United States toward energy independence. Global warming occurs when excess heat-trapping gases accumulate in the earth's atmosphere as a result of fossil-fuel burning and certain land use activities such as deforestation."
Paper, Glass and Plastic From 1990 to 2005, the amount of waste going to U.S. landfills has decreased by 9 million tons and continues to decrease each year. The Media Center supports the recycling effort at CNU; therefore, a recycling receptacle is available for you paper, plastic and glass.
Power Management A typical PC is active only 4 hours a day and idle for another 5.5 hours. In an effort to save energy, the Media Center sets each of their computers to the energy saver mode. After 20 minutes of idle activity, the computer will hibernate, which powers down your monitor to about 5 watts of energy and your PC to 2.3 watt.
