The Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium was formed in the fall of 2006 to stimulate public interest in authors, books, reading, and libraries, and to encourage the study and enjoyment of books. It was also created to encourage cooperation among all types of libraries on the Peninsula. Together, these libraries serve about 800,000 residents.

Furthermore, the VPLC members believe in the importance of the written word, and in the value of reading and writing. Each year, the Consortium plans to present regionally and nationally recognized authors to entertain and inspire the citizens of the Virginia Peninsula.
